Petra's is a piano bar and small stage on Commonwealth Ave in Plaza Midwood that opened in 2007. Queen City Nerve describes it as one of the city's queer-friendly rooms, with drag shows, the TutuTonight variety showcase, the Ultraviolet Sapphic Dance Party and Wednesday karaoke. Its own calendar runs karaoke nights, jazz sessions, bands and solo performers most weeks.
Charlotte Nightlife: Plaza Midwood
An early streetcar suburb east of Uptown, laid out along Central Avenue and The Plaza. Bungalows, a dive bar that has outlasted everything around it, a former church turned restaurant, and the tattoo shops and record stores that came with the rents. It has gentrified hard and kept more of its own character than most Charlotte neighborhoods managed.
Snug Harbor is a small pirate-themed room on Gordon Street in Plaza Midwood that has been booking national, regional and local bands since 2007. Doors are at 8pm and the show is at 9pm Monday through Saturday. Karaoke runs to 2am on Thursdays and Sundays, and DJ nights sit alongside the live bookings.
The Rabbit Hole is a live room on Commonwealth Avenue that books bands and DJs and sums itself up in three lines on its own site: good drinks, good music, good people. It runs to 2am six nights a week and opens at noon Friday through Sunday. Axios Charlotte reported new ownership for it and for Jackalope Jack's in August 2025.
The Workman's Friend is a Central Avenue pub that calls itself a friendly neighbourhood watering hole. It runs two rooms with different characters: a dark, cosy side and an open-air bar. It is the latest-closing room in Plaza Midwood on this list, open to 2am seven nights a week, and it opens at 10am on weekends.
The Thirsty Beaver is the small brick dive bar on Central Avenue that a 323-unit apartment complex was built around. Brothers Brian and Mark Wilson opened it in 2008 and lease the building from owner George Salem, who turned down two offers from the developer that bought the surrounding land for 8.5 million dollars in 2015. The developer built the apartments in a horseshoe around the bar instead, and the Associated Press called it Charlotte's own version of the house from Up. There is live music on Sundays and a pool table.
Whiskey Warehouse sits on The Plaza across from Supperland and calls itself a top shelf pub: classic American dining, craft beer and cocktails, with a rooftop above the main bar. The rooftop keeps its own hours and runs latest of all, to 2am on Friday and Saturday.
